This recipe is great for a lazy weekend brunch, or any time you want to make a special breakfast for someone. It's French toast taken up a notch!

This recipe pairs well with my Meal Prep Fruit Salad. If you're serving a larger brunch-type meal with a few options, try adding my Skillet Breakfast Pizza, my Bagel Breakfast Sandwiches with Pork Roll, Egg and Cheese or my Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Muffins. My Starbucks Copycat Brown Sugar Syrup will make great lattes and coffee drinks too!

🥘 Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make this recipe:

ingredients needed to make capn crunch French toast
  • large eggs
  • heavy cream
  • whole milk
  • pure vanilla extract - I prefer to use real vanilla extract and not imitation due to the ingredients they put in imitation - google it!
  • ground cinnamon
  • salt
  • baguette bread - I prefer getting a loaf and cutting it myself. I like to have a larger cut bread than pre-sliced sandwich bread gives.
  • unsalted butter
  • vegetable oil
  • Captain Crunch cereal - or Cap'n Crunch as it is written on the box.
  • maple syrup

See recipe card for quantities.

🍽 Equipment Needed

  • mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • food processor or rolling pin
  • large skillet

🔪 Instructions for making French Toast with Captain Crunch

When slicing baguette into 1-inch thick slices of bread, I like to use a serrated knife. This will keep the bread's shape and won't press down and flatten the bread.

My favorite knife to use for this is our serrated offset knife.

whisking eggs in a mixing bowl
adding heavy cream, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt to beaten eggs in mixing bowl

In a large bowl, whisk eggs until fully combined. Add heavy cream, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.

whisking eggs and other ingredients in mixing bowl
putting sliced bread in baking dish with egg mixture to soak

Whisk egg mixture until all is blended together. Add egg mixture to a shallow dish or baking pan. Add bread slices in a single layer and allow to soak for five minutes.

turning sliced bread over in egg mixture so other side can soak
captain crunch cereal ground in food processor

Turn bread over after five minutes, and allow to soak for another five minutes. While bread is soaking, place cereal in a food processor and process until the cereal has turned into crumbs. You can leave some larger pieces for extra crunch.

If you don't have a food processor, you can put the cereal in a ziploc bag and crush cereal with a heavy item like a rolling pin. Place crushed cap'n crunch cereal in a separate bowl.

melting butter and oil together in a skillet over medium heat
dipping egg-soaked bred in cereal crumbs coating both sides

Heat butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat until butter is melted and bubbly. Coat all sides of bread in the crushed cereal crumbs, ensuring a thick crust. You can double dip bread back in the egg mixture and cereal crumbs for an extra crispy, crunch crust.

Add coated bread to the skillet and cook on both sides until they are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.

Hint: Kitchen tongs are not required, but make turning and dipping French toast, so much easier. These are my favorite kitchen tongs.

Top with fresh whipped cream, real maple syrup and powdered sugar. Serve with fresh fruit and crispy bacon.

📋 Substitutions

Below are some common substitutions that can be used.

  • milk - substitute with extra creamy oat milk or almond milk
  • heavy cream - substitute with half and half
  • gluten-free - be aware that you can substitute the bread with a gluten-free variety, but the Cap'n Crunch cereal is not confirmed to be gluten-free. You would also need to switch that with a cereal that is specified as gluten-free.

🥣 Variations

Below are some fun variations using different cereal for this delicious French Toast with Captain Crunch recipe:

  • Rice Krispies
  • Cocoa or Fruity Pebbles
  • Apple Jacks
  • Frosted Flakes
  • Golden Grahams
  • Froot Loops

🫙 Storage and reheating

Store cooked French toast in a ziplock bag or sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat in a microwave or toaster oven until warmed.

The cooked French toast can also be frozen in a ziplock bag or sealed container for up to a month. Thaw toast in the refrigerator until no longer frozen, and reheat as indicated above.

⭐️ Top tip

In our house, we like to make a double batch of this French toast so we can freeze all of the leftovers and have this delicious breakfast quickly any day of the week! This is seriously the best French toast and you'll want it again and again!

❓FAQ

Can I bake this French toast instead of cooking in a skillet or frying pan?

Yes! Preheat your oven to 425°F and cook on a sheet pan for approximately 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Can I make this French toast in advance?

Yes, you can make this up to one or two days in advance. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. You can reheat in a microwave, warm up in a 375°F oven until warm, or reheat in a warm skillet. The oven and skillet will produce the crispiest results.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • food processor OR
  • Rolling Pin
  • serrated knife

Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 6 slices baguette bread sliced 1-inch thick
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups Captain Crunch cereal

Instructions

  • Slice baguette into 1-inch thick slices. A serrated knife works best, but is not required.
  • Add eggs to a large bowl. Whisk eggs until blended.
  • Add heavy cream, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt to eggs. Whisk together until all is blended.
  • Add egg mixture to a shallow dish or baking dish. A 10" x 15" casserole dish is what I like to use. Add bread and allow to soak for 10 minutes, turning all bread slices after 5 minutes.
  • Add cereal to a food processor and grind until you have a coarse crumb texture. You can leave larger pieces for a more crunchy texture. lf you don't have a food processor, add cereal to a large ziploc bag and crush cereal with a heavy object - a rolling pin works great here.
  • Heat butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it is bubbly. Dip bread in cereal crumbs. You can also do a double dip here for extra crunch - once more in the egg mixture, then again in the cereal crumbs.
  • Add coated bread to the hot skillet and cook on all sides until golden brown and crunchy.
  • Top with maple syrup, fresh whipped cream and powdered sugar. Serve with fresh fruit and crispy bacon.
