This recipe is a bit of a nostalgic recipe for me. It's from a restaurant called Silver Spoon Cafe (no longer in existence) that my friends and I used to love to visit as teenagers. They gave you warm bread with the most herby, delicious garlic and herb cheese spread. We would eat so much of it before our food came that we were pretty much full by the time any other food came to the table. I hope you love it as much as we did!
🩷 What you'll love about this recipe
▪️It's so easy! It takes mere minutes to put this quick herb spread together. This is one of my favorite recipes to pull out when I need something super quick and also delicious!
▪️Putting this on your dinner table with bread is the perfect choice to instantly elevate your meal. No one will know how simple this is.
▪️It takes only four ingredients to make this (not counting salt).
🥘 Recipe Ingredients
You’ll need the following ingredients to make this amazing garlic herb butter recipe from the Silver Spoon restaurant.

📝 Ingredient Notes
- butter - use real butter and unsalted, so you can control the amount of salt
- cream cheese - use the full fat version, regular cream cheese
- garlic cloves - please use fresh garlic - the jar garlic doesn't have the same flavor and the water in it will not allow the spread to get creamy and fluffy
- fresh chives - again, use fresh! The main focus of this recipe is the fresh garlic and fresh chives so don't use dried here.
📋 How to Make Garlic Herb Cream Cheese Spread Step-By-Step
Here are some visual instructions. Full instructions with exact ingredients can be found in the Recipe Card below.
Let the butter and the cream cheese sit out for about an hour or two and come to room temperature.
Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl. I like to use a stand mixer for this, but you can also use a hand mixer.

Mix until all ingredients are blended together and the butter spread is whipped and fluffy. Do not overtax, as it may begin to separate. Stop right when it is to this point shown below.

Serve with your favorite warm bread or spread on your morning bagel.

💡 Recipe Tips
Prep all of the ingredients in advance, but wait until right before serving to mix everything together. This spread will harden back up in the refrigerator and you won't get the original, creamy fluffy texture if you store it.
Leave the cream cheese and the butter out on the counter an hour before preparing this spread. It needs to be room temperature in order to get the creamy, fluffy texture.
Make Ahead Tip
Prep all of the ingredients before hand. Measure and leave out the cream cheese and butter 1-2 hours before you want to serve it. Chop the garlic and the chives. If everything is ready to go, this will take minutes to prepare.
🫙 Storage & Reheating
Storage: Store this in an airtight container in the fridge for 7-9 days. It will be a bit crumbly if you try to use this right out of the fridge. It's fine to use, but the texture is very different. To get the same fluffy texture, you need to take this out of the refrigerator an hour before you want to use. I remix in the stand mixer or with a hand mixer.
Freezing: This does not work well after freezing. I do not recommend.
🧂Additions & Substitutions
- Green onions, or shallots instead of chives. Mince very finely.
- Garlic powder if you are out of fresh garlic. Try 1 teaspoon to start and taste to see if you need more.
- Add black pepper or white pepper if you like.
- Parmesan cheese would be an excellent addition.
- Another great addition would be fresh parsley.
❓Your questions answered
Yes! Substitute vegan cream cheese and vegan butter and this will be 100% vegan.
